The IRS is beginning to increase their monitoring of the Earned Income Tax Credit. They are doing spot checks of returns through out the year. Part of what they are inspecting is the documentation that is used to verify the status of dependent children. To keep all of us out of trouble we are adding additional forms even for our clients that have been with us for a while, along with getting a copy of social security cards for everyone on the return and picture ID’s for the taxpayer and spouse (if filing a joint return). We are revising our filing system to make things easier in the future where we will be able to easily pull your entire history with us and verify that all information and ID’s are current rather than completing all new documentation each year.
